By the time you are reading this, the shots of arctic cold should be over and temperatures should be returning to normal for this time of year. While historically (as well as within my memory), the beginning couple of weeks of February have been able to drop the old mercury in the thermometer to below zero – sometimes with highs below zero—this latest batch of cold temperatures combined with high winds has been disheartening for those of us hoping for an early spring. The days are getting noticeably longer, birds are starting to pair up, and we get wind chill warnings. Somehow that just doesn’t seem right. But take heart! There are only 24 days until we return to daylight savings time (on March 13th) and only 31 days until the vernal equinox on March 20th. While you’re waiting for spring to arrive there are a number of new books available at your local public library to help you while away the time. Stay warm and enjoy!
